Cold water storage tank cleaning

Maintaining a clean and disinfected cold water storage tank is essential for ensuring safe and healthy water supply. The process begins with a thorough inspection of the tank to identify any structural issues, such as leaks or corrosion, which should be addressed before cleaning. The next step involves draining the tank completely and physically cleaning the interior surfaces to remove sediment, biofilm, and any other deposits. This can be done using a stiff brush or pressure washer, depending on the tank material. Once the tank is clean, it should be rinsed thoroughly with clean water. Disinfection is typically achieved by filling the tank with water treated with an appropriate concentration of chlorine or another suitable disinfectant, allowing it to sit for a specific period to ensure that all surfaces are sanitized. After disinfection, the tank should be thoroughly flushed with clean water to remove any residual disinfectant before being refilled for use. Regular maintenance and periodic cleaning and disinfection of storage tanks are crucial to prevent contamination and ensure water quality.

Results of a poorly maintained CWST

A poorly maintained cold water storage tank can lead to a host of significant issues, both health-related and structural. One of the primary concerns is the risk of bacterial contamination, such as Legionella, which can thrive in stagnant or inadequately cleaned water systems. This poses serious health risks, including Legionnaires' disease, a potentially severe form of pneumonia. Moreover, a neglected tank can suffer from corrosion and leaks, leading to water wastage and potential structural damage to the building. Sediment buildup and debris accumulation can reduce the efficiency of the water supply, causing blockages and reducing water pressure. Additionally, poor maintenance can result in foul odors and discolored water, making it unsuitable for consumption or use. Regular inspection and cleaning are essential to ensure the safe and efficient operation of cold water storage tanks, safeguarding both health and infrastructure.

Can I use the outlets while the tank is being cleaned

That depends on the type of system you have. If your property has 2 tanks that merge into one outlet then yes, or if you have a mains bypass we can also make it work but if your only operating from one tank then we do ask for you not to use the outlets as it may cause an airlock within the system.
